Orlaya 'White Finch' (Orlaya grandiflora)
A must-have for bouquet fillers and pollinator-friendly gardens, Orlaya 'White Finch' is the picture of elegance. Each flower head measures 2½–3½", featuring layers of lacy, snow-white petals surrounding delicate inner florets. The plants are full and well-branched, with strong, upright stems that hold up beautifully in fresh arrangements.

Orlaya is easy to grow and quick to flower, thriving in full sun and cooler conditions. As the blooms fade, they give way to star-shaped green seed pods that add a whimsical, textured element to bouquets or dried arrangements. Loved by beneficial insects and adored by designers for its versatility, this heirloom beauty brings grace to every corner of the garden.

HOW TO GROW:
Direct Sow (recommended): Sow seeds directly outdoors in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked, even if a light frost is still possible. In regions with mild winters, fall sowing is also an option. Choose a location with full sun and well-drained soil. Lightly cover the seeds—just enough to hold them in place—as light aids germination. Keep the soil consistently moist during the 10–21 day germination period.

Transplant (alternative): If starting indoors, sow into deep seed trays or individual pots 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Orlaya has a delicate root system and does not transplant well, so handle with care and transplant promptly once seedlings are ready and the risk of frost has passed.

Pinching: Pinching is not necessary. Plants naturally branch and produce elegant blooms. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage prolonged flowering.

Soil Preference and Watering: Orlaya prefers full sun and well-drained soil. It performs best with consistent moisture but will tolerate some drought once established.

Fertilizing: Fertilizing is not required for Orlaya. It performs best in average to lean soil.

Harvesting: For bouquets, harvest stems when the outer ring of blooms on the umbel has fully opened, but the inner florets are still in bud. This ensures a long vase life. Orlaya also produces attractive green star-shaped seed pods that can be harvested once they are firm. You can also allow the plants to self-sow if you desire a naturalized look.
