Audray Mix Gomphrena (Gomphrena globosa)

Also known as Globe Amaranth, is a hardworking garden favourite known for its vibrant, clover-like blooms and exceptional tolerance to heat and drought. This mix includes shades of pure white, rose-pink bicolour, and deep purple-red, offering cheerful pops of colour from mid-summer through to first frost, when many other flowers have faded.

Growing up to 28", this taller variety is perfect for cutting gardens and pollinator-friendly borders. The blooms are beloved by butterflies and bees, and their long-lasting quality makes them equally suited for fresh bouquets or everlasting dried arrangements. Despite their soft appearance, these plants are incredibly low-maintenance and thrive in even the hottest, driest summers.

A mix of Audray White, Bicolour Rose-Pink, and Purple-Red. Colour mix not guaranteed.
Also known as Globe Amaranth, Bachelor’s Buttons, or Makhmali in South Asia.

HOW TO GROW:
Transplant (recommended): Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before the last frost. Light is required for germination, so cover seeds very lightly—using a fine layer of vermiculite can help retain moisture. Bottom water or mist gently to avoid disturbing the seeds. Once the first true leaves appear, transplant into cell packs or larger containers. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions before transplanting after the last frost.

Direct Sowing (not recommended): Direct sowing is not recommended for Gomphrena globosa, as starting seeds indoors provides a much better success rate and an earlier, more uniform bloom.

Pinching and Support: Pinching the tops of young plants can encourage a bushier habit, though it is not strictly necessary. No support is typically needed for this mounding annual.

Soil Preference and Watering: Gomphrena thrives in full sun and requires well-drained soil. It is drought-tolerant once established. Keep foliage as dry as possible and avoid watering late in the day to reduce the risk of Alternaria and other fungal issues.

Fertilizing: Fertilizing is not required for Gomphrena. It performs best in average to lean soil.

Harvesting: For bouquets, harvest stems when the flowers are fully developed. For drying, which is its most popular use, harvest at the same stage and hang bunches upside down in a dark, well-ventilated area for 2–3 weeks until completely dry.
