A unique perennial grown for its striking, ornamental blue globes, Echinops ritro—commonly known as Globe Thistle—adds bold texture and architectural interest to both gardens and floral arrangements. The 1–3" wide, spherical blooms emerge greenish and mature to a stunning steel-blue, making them a standout in borders, pollinator plantings, and as cut or dried flowers.
The spiny, thistle-like foliage and upright stems give it a wild, sculptural quality, while its drought tolerance and adaptability make it an easy-care choice for hot, dry spots. Begins blooming in mid-summer, typically in the second year after planting.
Excellent for fresh and dried arrangements—its globe-shaped blooms hold colour and shape exceptionally well. Gloves are recommended during harvest, as leaves and stems are prickly.
Also known as Globe Thistle, Blue Thistle, or Echinops.

HOW TO GROW:
Transplant (recommended): Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before planting outdoors. Sow seeds and cover just enough to hold them in place, as some light is beneficial for germination. Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for 7–10 days before transplanting outdoors once all danger of frost has passed.
Direct Seed (alternative): Sow seeds directly outdoors once soil temperatures reach at least . Cover seeds lightly with soil and keep evenly moist until germination.
Pinching: Pinching is not necessary for Globe Thistle. Taller varieties may require staking to prevent them from toppling over in strong winds.
Soil Preference and Watering: Globe Thistle thrives in full sun and requires well-drained soil. It is a very drought-tolerant plant once established and performs best in lean soil.
Fertilizing: Fertilizing is not required for Globe Thistle.
Harvesting: For bouquets, harvest stems when the flower heads are fully formed but the tiny individual florets have not yet opened. The round, spiky heads provide excellent texture. For drying, harvest at the same stage and hang upside down in a dark, well-ventilated area for 2–3 weeks.
Other Tips: Globe Thistle is a hardy perennial that is highly attractive to pollinators. It is also deer resistant.
