Giant Hybrid Mix - Dahlia (Dahlia variabilis)
Bursting into bloom with grand, lush flowers, Giant Hybrid Mix Dahlia unfolds a lavish palette of salmon, coral, white, light yellow, and red. The 3–5″ blossoms—available in double, semi-double and single forms—crowd atop tall, statuesque stems that command attention in both garden beds and bouquets. Their bold presence declares a garden of generous summer joy.
More than just size and colour, these dahlias bring texture and drama. Each stem offers layered petals that softly ripple outward—a symphony of form and hue that glows in the afternoon sun. In arrangements, let them dominate the stage alongside deep-blue scabiosa for contrast, or soften them beside blush pink snapdragons for a romantic, vintage-inspired bouquet. Their grandeur invites you to embrace life in full bloom.

HOW TO GROW:
Transplant (Recommended): Sow seeds indoors 4-5 weeks before the last expected frost date. Cover the seed lightly with growing medium and keep the soil surface moist until emergence. When seedlings develop their first true leaves, transplant them into larger pots or cell packs. To maintain healthy seedlings, do not allow plants to become root-bound and handle the roots carefully to minimize disturbance. After the last frost when the soil has warmed, harden off the seedlings and transplant them into the garden, spacing them 9-12 inches apart.
Direct Seed: Wait until after the last frost when the soil temperature is consistently between 18–21°C. Sow thinly, 2 seeds per foot, about 1/4 inch deep. Cover lightly but firmly. Keep the surface moist until emergence. Thin seedlings to 9–12 inches apart after the first true leaves appear.
Soil, Fertilizing, and Watering: Dahlias thrive in rich, loose, well-drained soil. Amend the planting area with compost or well-rotted manure before planting. Dahlias are heavy feeders. Work in a vegetable or balanced, all-purpose fertilizer at the time of planting. Once the plants are established (about a month after transplanting), apply a low-nitrogen fertilizer (e.g., a 5-10-10 ratio) every 4-6 weeks to encourage flower production over excessive foliage. Stop fertilizing in late summer. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during hot weather. Deep watering encourages deep root growth. Avoid overhead watering to help prevent fungal diseases.
Maintenance and Tips: Plant in a location that receives at least 6-8 hours of full sun daily. To encourage a bushier plant with more blooms, pinch the central growing tip when the plant is about 12 inches tall and has 4 sets of true leaves. This promotes lateral branching. Taller varieties may need staking to support the heavy blooms and prevent the stalks from snapping in the wind. Install stakes at planting time. Regularly deadhead (remove spent blooms) to encourage the plant to produce more flowers throughout the season.
Harvesting and Storing Tubers: Preparation: Plants propagated from seeds will produce tubers that can be saved. In the fall, after the first hard frost has caused the foliage to blacken and the plants have died back, cut the plants back to 2–4 inches above the soil line. Carefully dig up the tubers, being gentle to avoid damage, and remove excess soil.
