Yellow Lanceleaf (Coreopsis lanceolata)

Yellow Lanceleaf Coreopsis is a hardy, drought-tolerant perennial that has naturalized across the Prairies and into the Rocky Mountains. Its bright, cheerful yellow blooms sit atop stiff, upright stems, making it an excellent choice for cut flowers, garden borders, or container plantings.

This versatile plant thrives in heat and humidity and prefers well-drained, nutrient-poor soils, though it adapts to a wide range of garden conditions. Highly attractive to pollinators and beneficial insects, it supports a healthy, wildlife-friendly garden. Deadhead regularly for continuous blooms, and once established, it requires minimal care.

Also known as Lanceleaf Tickseed or Sand Coreopsis.

HOW TO GROW:

Direct Sow (recommended): Sow seeds directly outdoors in early spring while light frost is still possible. In areas with mild winters, seed can be sown in the fall. Lightly rake the seeds into the soil and keep the area consistently moist until germination.

Transplant (alternative): Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Sow on the surface of the soil and lightly cover with a thin layer of soil or vermiculite. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions before transplanting after all danger of frost has passed.

Pinching: Pinching is not necessary for most Coreopsis varieties, but deadheading spent flowers will encourage a longer blooming season.

Soil Preference and Watering: Coreopsis adapts to a wide range of soils but prefers well-drained conditions and full sun. It is drought-tolerant once established and will not tolerate soggy roots.

Fertilizing: Do not fertilize Coreopsis. Rich soil or feeding can reduce flowering.

Harvesting: For bouquets, harvest stems when the flowers are fully open. This perennial may self-sow and spreads slowly via underground rhizomes.
