Firmament Forget-Me-Not (Cynoglossum amabile)

Delicate as twilight, Cynoglossum amabile ‘Firmament’ carries the truest shade of sky-blue upon its airy stems. Known as the Chinese forget-me-not, this old-fashioned favourite produces clouds of tiny, star-like blooms that appear to float in clusters. Each flower opens with a soft, powdery brilliance, creating a celestial haze in the garden that inspired its name. Upright stems, slender foliage, and a branching habit make it as graceful in the border as it is long-lasting in a vase.

This variety is a treasured cut flower, producing elegant stems over a long season when blooms are harvested regularly. Bees and pollinators linger on its blossoms, while gardeners prize its ability to naturalize lightly by self-seeding. Pair the cool blue tones with white cosmos for a night-sky effect, or soften them beside blush pink snapdragons for a romantic pastel display. Whether scattered through cottage gardens or woven into fresh bouquets, ‘Firmament’ offers a luminous touch that feels both nostalgic and timeless.

HOW TO GROW:
Transplant (recommended): Sow seeds indoors 3–4 weeks before your average last frost date. Cover seeds lightly. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for 7–10 days before transplanting outdoors after the danger of frost has passed.

Direct Seed (alternative): Sow seeds directly into the garden as soon as the soil can be worked in early spring. Cover seeds lightly. Thin as needed once the first true leaves appear.

Pinching: Pinching is not necessary for Chinese Forget-Me-Not.

Soil Preference and Watering: Chinese Forget-Me-Not prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. It performs best in cool weather with consistent moisture.

Fertilizing: Fertilizing is not required for Chinese Forget-Me-Not. It performs best in average to lean soil.

Harvesting: For bouquets, harvest stems when the flowers are fully open. To prevent heavy self-seeding, cut spent seed heads after flowering, unless a naturalized look is desired.
