Baby’s Breath (Gypsophila elegans)
Baby’s Breath is the quintessential filler flower, beloved for its airy clouds of tiny, star-shaped blooms that bring lightness and elegance to garden beds, borders, and floral arrangements. Its delicate, branching stems create a soft, ethereal effect that beautifully complements roses, zinnias, snapdragons, and other garden favorites, making it indispensable for both fresh bouquets and dried arrangements. Pollinators are attracted to its subtle flowers, adding a gentle hum of life to your garden. Perfect for cottage-style plantings, wildflower mixes, and cutting gardens, Baby’s Breath elevates any display with timeless charm.
An easy-to-grow annual, this variety thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, producing continuous blooms throughout the season. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage prolonged flowering, or allow some to self-seed for effortless naturalization in sunny spots. Low-maintenance, long-blooming, and endlessly versatile, Baby’s Breath is a must-have for gardeners seeking soft texture, airy elegance, and a delicate finishing touch. Also known as Gypsophila or Baby’s Breath Annual.

HOW TO GROW:
Direct Seeding (recommended): Sow seeds directly outdoors after the last frost. Plant seeds 3 mm (⅛") deep and barely cover with soil. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination.
Indoor Sowing (alternative): Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Transplant into cell packs or larger containers when the first true leaves appear. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for 7–10 days before transplanting outdoors after the danger of frost has passed.
Pinching: Pinching is not necessary for Baby's Breath.
Succession Sowing: To ensure a continuous supply of blooms throughout the season, sow every 2 weeks throughout the summer.
Soil Preference and Watering: Baby's Breath prefers full sun and requires well-drained, slightly alkaline soil. It is drought-tolerant once established and does not perform well in overly wet conditions.
Fertilizing: Fertilizing is not required for Baby's Breath. It performs best in average to lean soil.
Harvesting: For bouquets, harvest stems when the flowers are fully open. To dry, hang bunches upside down in a dark, well-ventilated area for 2–3 weeks.
