HOW TO GROW:
Direct Seeding (recommended): Sow seeds directly outdoors after all danger of frost has passed. Atriplex is a fast-growing annual that establishes well from direct sowing. Plant seeds ¼"–½" deep, spacing them 6–12" apart.
Transplanting (alternative): For an earlier start, you can sow seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost. Handle seedlings with care during transplanting, as they grow quickly and can be sensitive to root disturbance.
Pinching and Support: Pinching the tops of young plants can encourage a bushier habit, which is often desirable for varieties grown for their colorful foliage. No support is typically needed.
Soil Preference and Watering: Atriplex thrives in full sun and a wide range of soil types, including poor or sandy soil. It is extremely drought-tolerant once established and does not require much water.
Fertilizing: Fertilizing is not necessary. Atriplex performs best in lean soils, and too much fertility can lead to weak, leggy growth.
Harvesting: For bouquets, harvest stems when the foliage has a vibrant color and the stems are firm. For its edible leaves, harvest when they are young and tender, similar to spinach. You can also harvest the flower heads and seeds for use as a filler.
