Blossom Pearl Corn Cockle (Agrostemma githago)

Blossom Pearl is a delicate heirloom favorite, offering ethereal blush-pink blooms atop long, graceful stems. The papery flowers, reminiscent of floating petals, open from tightly swirled buds and sway gently in the breeze, creating a soft, romantic effect in both the garden and bouquets. Silvery-gray foliage provides a subtle, elegant backdrop, highlighting surrounding blooms.

Ideal for cutting gardens, cottage-style beds, and wildflower mixes, this variety pairs beautifully with pastel-toned flowers such as Nigella, Baby’s Breath, or Lacy Didiscus, adding texture and gentle contrast to arrangements.

Easy to grow from seed in full sun with well-drained soil. Once established, plants self-sow readily to provide recurring charm.

Caution: All parts of the plant are toxic if ingested—keep away from pets and small children.

HOW TO GROW:
Direct Seed (recommended): Sow seeds outdoors as soon as the soil can be worked in early spring. Plant seeds ⅛" deep. Once the first true leaves appear, thin seedlings to a final spacing of 6–12" apart. For continuous blooms, sow at 2–3 week intervals until midsummer.

Transplant (alternative): Start seeds indoors 4–5 weeks before the last frost. Use deep pots to accommodate the plant's taproot. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for 7–10 days before transplanting outdoors after the last frost.

Pinching: Pinching is not necessary for Agrostemma. Taller plants may benefit from light support in windy areas.

Soil Preference and Watering: Agrostemma thrives in full sun and performs best in average to poor, well-drained soil. It is a very drought-tolerant plant once established.

Fertilizing: Fertilizing is not required for Agrostemma.

Harvesting: For bouquets, harvest stems when the flowers are fully open.

Other Tips: Agrostemma performs best in cool weather and blooms from July to August when sown in early May. It readily self-seeds and may return year after year under the right conditions.
