Pygmy Buff Calendula (Calendula officinalis 'Pygmy Buff')

With apricot-buff petals and rich coppery undersides, Pygmy Buff practically glows in the garden, radiating the warm tones of a late-summer sunset. This compact, dwarf variety is perfectly sized for containers, edging, or mass plantings in borders, and its long-lasting blooms are equally stunning in a vase.

Calendulas are among the fastest flowers to bloom from seed—often flowering in just two months—and are cherished for their easy care. Known also as English Marigold or Pot Marigold, they attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Their petals are edible, can be used for natural dyeing, and hold value in herbal and skincare preparations.

Pairs beautifully with Strawberry Blonde calendula, Apricot Lemonade cosmos, Pincushion Mix scabiosa, or creamy double stock for arrangements rich in warm, romantic tones.

HOW TO GROW:
Direct Seed (recommended): Sow seeds directly outdoors after the last frost. For continuous blooms, make 2–3 successive sowings 2–3 weeks apart, from summer through to heavy frost.

Transplant (alternative): Start seeds indoors 4–5 weeks before the last frost. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions before transplanting outdoors after the last frost.

Pinching: Pinching the tops of young plants can encourage a bushier habit and more blooms.

Soil Preference and Watering: Calendula prefers full sun and well-drained soil. It is very adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions. Water consistently, but avoid overwatering.

Fertilizing: Fertilizing is not required for Calendula. It performs best in average to lean soil.

Harvesting: Harvest calendula flowers when they are fully open. The petals are edible and can be used to garnish salads or other dishes.

Other Tips: Calendula may self-seed if allowed to mature at season’s end.
