Pink Surprise Calendula (Calendula officinalis 'Pink Surprise')

Despite its name, Pink Surprise charms mostly in soft orangey-apricot tones, with the occasional elusive blush-pink bloom to keep you guessing. The fully double flowers feature apricot petals with a glowing orange reverse and a warm brown centre, making them just as lovely in a vase as they are in the garden.

Calendulas are among the fastest flowers to bloom from seed—often in as little as two months—and are delightfully easy to grow. Also known as English Marigold or Pot Marigold, they’re beloved by pollinators and beneficial insects. The petals are edible, can be used for natural dyeing, and are valued in medicinal and skincare preparations.

Pairs beautifully with Strawberry Blonde and Pygmy Buff calendulas, Antique Shades snapdragons, or Champagne stock for a romantic, vintage-inspired palette.

HOW TO GROW:
Direct Seed (recommended): Sow seeds directly outdoors after the last frost. For continuous blooms, make 2–3 successive sowings 2–3 weeks apart, from summer through to heavy frost.

Transplant (alternative): Start seeds indoors 4–5 weeks before the last frost. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions before transplanting outdoors after the last frost.

Pinching: Pinching the tops of young plants can encourage a bushier habit and more blooms.

Soil Preference and Watering: Calendula prefers full sun and well-drained soil. It is very adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions. Water consistently, but avoid overwatering.

Fertilizing: Fertilizing is not required for Calendula. It performs best in average to lean soil.

Harvesting: Harvest calendula flowers when they are fully open. The petals are edible and can be used to garnish salads or other dishes.

Other Tips: Calendula may self-seed if allowed to mature at season’s end.
