Autumn Sneezeweed (Helenium antumuale)

Bring dependable, late-season cheer to your garden with Autumn Sneezeweed! This hardy perennial is a crucial food source for pollinators like bumble bees preparing for winter, making it an ecological powerhouse. Native to a vast range, from the Northwest Territories to Florida, Helenium is incredibly adaptable. Each plant produces up to 100 bright yellow flowers on branched stems, creating a spectacular display. For best results, keep spent flowers picked and ensure the soil doesn't dry out completely. Autumn Sneezeweed looks sensational when mixed with red-flowered plants and may benefit from support for its tall stems.

HOW TO GROW:

Direct Sowing (recommended): Sow seeds directly outdoors in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Alternatively, sow in the fall. Barley t cover, as light is required for germination. Keep the area consistently moist until seedlings are established, then thin to a final spacing.

Transplant (alternative): Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before the last frost. Barley cover, as they require light to germinate. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions before transplanting outdoors after the last frost.

Pinching: Pinching the tops of young plants when they are about 6–8" tall will encourage a bushier habit and more flower stems. Taller varieties may require a support structure, such as horizontal netting, to prevent them from toppling over in windy conditions.

Soil Preference and Watering: Helenium thrives in full sun and prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil. It is not a drought-tolerant plant and will perform best with consistent watering throughout the season.

Fertilizing: A single application of a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer in the spring is usually sufficient to support its vigorous growth.

Harvesting: For bouquets, harvest stems when the flowers are about to open or are fully open. Deadheading spent blooms will encourage a longer blooming season.

Other Tips: Helenium is a hardy perennial that provides excellent color and a late-season food source for pollinators. Dividing the plant every 2–3 years will help maintain its vigor.
