Delicate, romantic, and full of whimsy, Love-in-a-Puff (also known as Balloon Vine or Heart Seed) is a fast-growing annual vine that enchants at every stage. In midsummer, airy white flowers bloom among finely divided, lace-like leaves. These are soon followed by papery, light green balloon-like seed pods that float gently in the breeze. Hidden inside each inflated capsule are three seeds, each naturally adorned with a perfect white heart — a botanical surprise that's loved by children and gardeners alike.

Perfect for trellises, fences, or arbors, this vining beauty can climb 10–12 feet in a season. Easy to grow from seed and makes a lovely addition to whimsical or romantic garden designs.

HOW TO GROW:
Transplanting (recommended): Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before your average last frost date. Sow seeds into pots or cell trays and keep them at a warm temperature of  to encourage germination, which takes 10–21 days. Harden off seedlings carefully and transplant outdoors only after all danger of frost has passed and night temperatures remain consistently warm.

Direct Seeding (alternative): Sow seeds directly outdoors after the last frost date, when the soil has warmed. This is a good option in warmer climates where the growing season is long.

Pinching and Support: Pinching is not necessary for this vining annual. However, it requires a sturdy trellis or vertical support, as the vines can quickly reach 10–12 feet in length.

Soil Preference and Watering: Love-in-a-Puff is extremely sensitive to cold and thrives best in full sun and well-drained soil. Water regularly, but avoid overwatering. Established plants are relatively drought-tolerant and can handle short, dry spells. This plant also performs well in large containers with support.

Fertilizing: A balanced, all-purpose fertilizer can be applied every 4–6 weeks throughout the growing season. A layer of compost at the time of planting can also provide a good nutrient base.

Harvesting: The unique, puffy seed pods are the main attraction. For use in arrangements, harvest the pods when they have fully inflated. You can also harvest the seeds once the pods turn brown and dry.
