Baby Blue Eyes (Nemophila menziesii)

Charming, easygoing, and brimming with personality, Baby Blue Eyes creates a dreamy carpet of sky-blue blooms with crisp white centres. This beloved North American heirloom is a cool-season annual, thriving in spring and early summer, especially in partial shade or cooler climates.

Compact and low-growing, it’s perfect for rockeries, borders, containers, hanging baskets, or nestled between vegetable rows as a pollinator-friendly companion. Its cheerful flowers blend beautifully with other self-sowing annuals, drawing in bees and other beneficial insects.

For an extended display, sow in succession every few weeks. A natural fit for cottage gardens, wildflower meadows, and children’s plots, Baby Blue Eyes brings a fresh, whimsical touch wherever it grows.

HOW TO GROW:
Direct Sow (recommended): Sow seeds directly outdoors in early spring while there is still a light risk of frost. Nemophila prefers cool weather and performs best when direct sown. Choose a location with full sun to partial shade. Lightly press seeds into the soil, barely covering them, as light aids germination. Keep the soil consistently moist during the 10–14 day germination period.

Transplanting (not recommended): Nemophila does not transplant well. Starting indoors or moving established plants will likely result in transplant shock and poor growth.

Pinching: No pinching is necessary; plants naturally form a low, spreading habit with delicate foliage and blooms. You can deadhead spent flowers to prolong blooming into early summer.

Soil Preference and Watering: Nemophila prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It performs best with consistent moisture and does not tolerate long periods of drought.

Fertilizing: Fertilizing is not required for Nemophila. It performs best in moderately fertile soil.

Other Tips: This charming annual also grows well in containers. Use smaller pots to restrict root space, as Nemophila prefers slightly crowded roots. In containers, it is best kept in partial shade to prevent heat stress.
