HOW TO GROW:
Direct Sowing (recommended): For best results, sow wildflower seeds into a prepared seedbed during one of the following windows:

  • Spring: Early May through mid-June

  • Early Spring (for natural stratification): Late March and early April

  • Fall (for natural stratification): Mid-September through to late October

A very early spring or late fall sowing allows any dormant seeds to be naturally stratified over the winter, which can improve germination.

Transplanting (not recommended): Due to the variety of seeds in a mix, transplanting is not recommended.

Site Preparation: Remove weeds by hand or apply an organic, non-selective herbicide. Loosen the soil to a depth of approximately 2.5 cm (1 inch) with a stiff rake, cultivator, or hoe. Flowers will germinate and establish much better when planted into a bed of well-drained, loose soil, rather than dense or compacted topsoil.

Sowing: Broadcast the seed evenly over the prepared area. For smaller seeds, you can mix them with dry sand to improve distribution. Natural forces such as rain, snow, and frost-heaving of the soil will work the seed down into the soil bed.

Pinching and Support: Pinching is not necessary for a wildflower mix. No support is typically needed for the plants.

Soil Preference and Watering: Wildflowers perform best in full sun and well-drained, loose soil. Irrigate as needed through the first growing season to ensure seeds germinate and young plants become established.

Fertilizing: Fertilizing is not recommended, as it can encourage weed growth and lush foliage at the expense of flowers.

Harvesting: For bouquets, cut flowers as needed. For continued blooms, deadheading can be beneficial. To encourage natural self-seeding for the following year, allow some flowers to go to seed at the end of the season.
